Western North Carolina — September 3, 2026 — Farrington Development LLC today announced the launch of Project Heliosphere, an early-stage research and development initiative exploring a new model for personal digital identity, data ownership, artificial intelligence, and decentralized online interaction.
Project Heliosphere is being designed around a simple principle:
The human should remain at the center of the digital ecosystem.
Rather than requiring individuals to repeatedly rebuild their identity, relationships, preferences, history, and knowledge inside separate technology platforms, Project Heliosphere will investigate the creation of a portable "Human Biosphere" capable of interacting with multiple applications, communities, AI systems, and digital services.
The project will initially explore technologies based on the AT Protocol, the decentralized networking technology underlying Bluesky, while also examining complementary technologies for private data, permissions, artificial intelligence, personal memory, credentials, and application interoperability.
Farrington Development envisions a future in which an individual's digital identity and context can exist independently of any single social network, AI provider, software company, or application.
Under the Project Heliosphere concept, a person could maintain a persistent digital environment containing selected elements such as:
- Portable identity and credentials
- Personal and professional relationships
- Communities and areas of interest
- User-controlled feeds and information sources
- Personal knowledge and digital history
- AI agents authorized by the individual
- Granular permissions controlling access to information
- Connections to multiple AI models and service providers
- Public, community, professional, family, and private digital spaces
Instead of artificial intelligence platforms becoming permanent custodians of a person's accumulated digital context, Project Heliosphere will investigate an architecture in which the individual owns and controls that context and selectively grants AI systems access to it.
This approach could allow people to use different AI models for different purposes without surrendering their digital identity to any one provider.
A research task might be assigned to one AI system, software development to another, image generation to another, and sensitive local processing to a privately operated model — all while the individual's underlying identity and personal context remain under their own control.

Project Heliosphere will also explore the concept of overlapping digital "biospheres."
An individual may participate simultaneously in family, professional, geographic, educational, business, publishing, and community networks without requiring each organization to maintain a completely separate digital identity for that person.
Regional publishers, organizations, businesses, social platforms, AI assistants, and future applications could become participants in the individual's digital environment rather than owners of it.
Farrington Development expects the earliest Project Heliosphere prototypes to focus on:

Portable decentralized identity capable of being used across compatible applications and services.
Digital circles and spaces
Separate environments for public activity, friends, family, professional relationships, communities, and private information.
Personal knowledge and context
A structured system for storing information that individuals choose to preserve about their interests, projects, history, preferences, and activities.
AI permissions
A permission system allowing an individual to determine which AI systems or agents may access specific categories of information and for how long.
AI model independence
An architecture capable of routing tasks among commercial frontier models, specialized models, open-source models, and locally operated artificial intelligence.
Open interoperability
Development of schemas and interfaces allowing independent applications to interact with portions of the Human Biosphere with explicit user authorization.
Farrington Development emphasizes that Project Heliosphere is currently an experimental research and development initiative, not a finished commercial platform.
The company intends to evaluate existing open protocols rather than unnecessarily recreate technology that already exists. AT Protocol is expected to play an important role in early experimentation involving decentralized identity, social relationships, portable data, and interoperable applications, while private and sensitive information may require separate storage and security architectures.
The long-term objective extends beyond building another social network.
Project Heliosphere is exploring whether a new digital layer can be created in which social networks, publishers, businesses, communities, applications, and artificial intelligence systems interact around the individual rather than enclosing the individual inside proprietary platforms.

Almost every generation of technology has required the human to move into somebody else's system. Project Heliosphere asks a different question: What happens when the system moves around the human?"
Development and architectural research for Project Heliosphere begins immediately.
